After twelve years as a firefighter there have been many ups and downs. You see people in their most vulnerable moments. I have been lucky to witness the beginning of life but unfortunately, more often than not we are involved in people's last moments.
Overdoses, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and structure fires have claimed many lives over the years that I have served my community. Many people's worst day has become my every day. It makes many people wonder why anyone would ever work in a firefighting or paramedic profession.
Some days I bury my head in my hands as I feel the pain and suffering of those that I serve. What keeps me going and responding to each and every call is the opportunity to make even a small positive difference in someone's worst day. To have a positive outcome on a CPR call, to reverse an overdose before it is too late, or to rescue someone from a burning building is a feeling like none other. With what we do, my crew has become family and I trust them with my life and we help each other with the ups and downs of the job.
