Really…I can’t believe it! I just entered a new season of my life, and now I have breast cancer? I’m now one of those stats who receive that awful diagnosis just months after retirement? Shock, disbelief, uncertainty…so many emotions…such a crazy learning curve. So many questions, so much to try to understand, decisions to make, much needed patience waiting for that next phone call and that next appointment. Do I really need to be a rarity in this journey that has tumors in both breasts? Confusion…the need for surgeries...the cancer has not reached your lymph nodes…no, it IS in your lymph nodes. What??? And now you will need chemo…no, you will need a double round of chemo…anger, sadness, feeling overwhelmed.
Throughout my health journey these last few years, I needed to dig deep to find courage and hope. Over time came the realization that I was being carried…thank you, Lord, for the gift of faith. “One day at a time” became my motto. Unexpected support, visits (until Covid 19 hit), deeper connections with family and friends, amazing doctors and health professionals who worked with me one step at a time, some so genuinely cared. Now it’s all about prevention. I am so grateful for the strength given in times of hopelessness, for the gift of life, for the gift of each new day, for the capacity to care more deeply and to support others as they face their diagnosis and their journey. I am SO thankful to be on the other side.
