How does one have nostalgia for a place they’ve never been? I’m not sure if I’ve ever unpacked this fully, or if being anywhere else will ever make as much sense. But setting foot into India, it was as if I had never left.
I am a first generation Canadian to parents who migrated from Fiji, in search of a better life. We had inherited our roots from India, thanks to the British, and being Canadian I felt that I was constantly walking one foot in either culture and direction - never fully belonging to either.
My decision to backpack India came after I took a yoga teacher training in the west. Hungry for something more than what the west couldn’t feed me. Six months of backpacking later, and I could spend the rest of my lifetime trying to unpack this trip as a woman, and as a westerner, but more so as a daughter of this land and its people. Just trying to consciously shed her ties with a misogynistic past, connect the dots and make sense of it all to walk wholeheartedly into a healed future. There is so much to say, and yet I remain just as confused, and yet more connected to myself than ever before. Feet firmly planted in either world forever more.
